Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 - Component-Based Development goes Mass Market! On the 9th September 1998, Microsoft announced the launch and availability of its Visual Studio 6.0 Integrated Development Environment (IDE). Whilst Microsoft has clearly been pursuing a component-based route in its infrastructure technologies (e.g. COM, MTS) for some time, this release is significant in that it represents a serious attempt to deliver a comprehensive CBD environment. The Visual Studio products are already pervasive, in use by millions of developers, and we can expect that version 6.0 will be the platform used by many developers delivering NT-based enterprise-level applications.
