Industry Standards in Perspective What standards do we really need and where are they coming from? By now we are accustomed to the Microsoft approach to standard setting. Start off with an immature product after the early market has become established and gradually evolve through a number of releases to a mature offering that becomes the de facto standard. Examples include operating systems, spreadsheets, E-mail systems, word processors, server operating systems, and now, component models.
