Abstract: Seismic Shifts in the Market IBM’s WebSphere and EJB announcements are primarily concerned with server-side development, similarly Microsoft’s COM+. We see the SINO (Sun, IBM, Netscape, and Oracle) Java vision, and Microsoft DNA as further reflecting a seismic shift in the market, as reflected in Figure 2. With Windows having become the de facto standard for clients, competition by 1995 was primarily between server vendors for hardware, operating systems, and database. Integration was primarily how to connect clients to servers. The market has shifted in recent years, Microsoft have begun to encroach on the server market via NT, and a lesser extent DCOM, whilst the Sun/IBM/Netscape
