Abstract: Notes on Four-Tier Architecture The four-tier architecture enables different data servers to be combined to support a process server, which are then combined into an application. The application is enabled for multiple client types. Only accessed via clear interfaces, this enables a server on any tier to be exchanged, as required, with a minimum of impact on those either side of it. The four-tier architecture extends the more common three-tier architecture, with the application server layer. This reflects that process servers will be reused in different applications.
