Introducing Capability Dependency Diagramming as an important technique that can be used in many ways to introduce, simplify and complement the wider SOA Roadmap |

I have commented many times that SOA is a significant challenge in change management. Superficially SOA appears to be an elegant architectural concept that can enable better separation of concerns and reduced complexity. However the reality of SOA is that it requires change to many of the foundation stones that underlie the modern enterprise.
We created the CBDI SOA Roadmap way back when as a way to help simplify the change management task – by organizing SOA capabilities into phases that correspond to increasing maturity. We also use various techniques to analyze, structure and communicate change requirements, tasks and outcomes. One of these is the Capability Dependency Diagram.
I find the Capability Dependency Diagram (CDD) an incredibly useful technique because it easily communicates what needs to be done to support the SOA environment. By simply showing what capabilities are dependent on other capabilities we can build an action plan that is independent of technology, time and resources, and a good basis for project and program planning. |
