We have been drawing capability dependency diagrams to support SOA adoption and maturity, as well as to understand business requirements. This article provides guidelines on drawing, refining and using these diagrams.

| Backgrounder: |
In recent years, Capability has emerged as a first-class construct within SOA and related disciplines. It can be found both in the commercial/civilian arena (such as Microsoft’s Motion1 methodology, described as a method for project prioritization and selection) and in military applications (such as the Strategic View recently added to the MOD architecture framework2 ).
We have described the analysis of capabilities in previous Journal articles, both in the context of business requirements and SOA maturity models. This article describes a technique for analyzing capabilities and the dependencies between them. It can be applied at three levels.
