Title: In Search of a Common SOA Language
Author: John Butler and John Dodd

Report Type: Journal
Report Class: Market Analysis
Abstract: We believe that a widely accepted reference model for SOA will accelerate the take up of SOA, since tool vendors and practitioners will have a more solid and common base to work from. We observe that a number of SOA reference architectures, ontologies, metamodels and profiles have been published, some of them focused solely on Web services, while others admit a more general notion of Service. These ‘models’ – including our own – vary in purpose, rigor and extent, but all demonstrate the fact that certain organizations and individuals perceive a strong need for a common SOA language. This article provides an initial comparison of some of the published reference models, including the SAE Metamodel from Everware-CBDI. We go on to explain what further actions we are taking to unify SOA concepts. But before that, we shall discuss the importance of a common language and reference model to our client base.
Backgrounder: The Need for a Common Language In spite of, or perhaps because of, the fact that SOA is now a widely regarded architectural approach, the “language” used to talk about SOA still varies greatly from organization to organization. Different terms are used for similar concepts; the same terms are used with different meanings; and in some cases, terms that are deemed central to one reference model are absent from others.
