| Abstract: |
While SOA infrastructure may be project specific in the early stages, it rapidly becomes apparent that there are real benefits to be gained from standardizing to some extent at the enterprise level. In developing the enterprise SOA infrastructure it is useful to use maturity modeling techniques and in this report we explore an approach that extends and specializes the guidance we have given in a our general maturity model reports. |
| Backgrounder: |
In our Maturity Model reports we have conventionally included operational infrastructure as one activity stream in order to guide and manage the SOA infrastructure development in line with application driven requirements.
In practice many enterprises are acquiring SOA infrastructure on a project by project basis because this is the natural driver and justification for the investment. Consequently there is a tight linkage between infrastructure and application needs. However most enterprises will come to recognize the significant opportunities that are created by some level of infrastructure standardization and it may often be that investment in common infrastructure is one of the first and most obvious steps to enterprise SOA adoption.
There are always linkages between SOA infrastructure and applications, however as the infrastructure increasingly supports a broadly based set of business service needs the relationship changes from specific feature function support to macro issues such as consistent security, trust and SLA architectures; consolidation of resources to deliver economies of scale and scalability and so on.
In this report we suggest that the enterprise Service Oriented Infrastructure (SOI) has a maturity model that needs to be addressed, communicated and managed in a manner that is largely independent of individual application programs. Further we suggest that by delivering levels of cost, adaptability and standardization, SOI maturity is potentially an important enabler of new business strategies. |
