| Abstract: | Although the world is transitioning to web services there is still much to do provide comprehensive support for component-based development and deployment. However web services present serious complications particularly in deployment. Can the J2EE platform and its alliance respond? Is there a new layer in the stack about to emerge? The software industry is urgently upgrading its platform products in order to secure market share in supporting the next generation Internet. Microsoft has committed to a massive reengineering project to deliver the .NET framework together with related tools and services. In contrast the J2EE alliance has embraced what looks remarkably like a wrapping strategy whilst they implement native platform support. Recent announcements from Sun Microsystems have provided some clarification on how the core J2EE specification and platform will evolve to provide web service support in the programming and transactional environment, but we suggest there is much more to be done to the broader stack to address real limitations in asset management and deployment. | ||
