Title: SOA Center of Excellence and other Organizational Support Models
Author: Richard Veryard

Report Type: Journal
Report Class: Best Practice
Abstract: Organizational infrastructure for SOA Adoption and Excellence Introducing SOA is a significant change management challenge requiring ongoing modification of conventional practices, roles and responsibilities in line with maturing capabilities. Consequently there will be no one organizational pattern that will be right for all stages of maturity. While the Center of Excellence pattern is an important change agent, we need to use it in context with the bigger picture. This article provides guidelines for establishing an organizational infrastructure for SOA, including an SOA Center of Excellence, which will drive and guide the adoption and use of SOA across the enterprise.
Backgrounder: The adoption of enterprise SOA has been slow, often because many firms are focused on tactical, project focused implementations as opposed to strategic capability development. In this article, we show how to start a Center of Excellence (CoE) on a modest investment with specific benefits that support implementations and create the feedback loop that generates repeatable practices for increased implementation efficiencies.
