Author: John Dodd
Publication Date: 22 June 2006
Report Type: Journal
Report Class: Best Practice
Abstract: Business capability is emerging as a useful business modeling concept that maps well to software services. This article explores the idea that an organization adopting SOA would do well to identify and describe their business capabilities, with a view to acquiring software services which support each distinct business capability.
Backgrounder: Structure of this Report We start by explaining what is meant by business capability. We provide a definition and discuss the main characteristics. We then describe the ways in which a business capability can be mapped to services within the Service Portfolio Plan. Thirdly, we offer advice on how to identify business capabilities. Business capability can be treated as a first class concept within business modeling, along with business process, business concept, organization units and so on. We conclude by explaining the benefits of introducing the capability notion into the business modeling tool bag, and provide a template for collecting the essential properties of a business capability.
