Title: Towards the Lightweight Enterprise - Business Modeling and Design for SOA and Enterprise Mashups
Author: Richard Veryard
Publication Date: 26 April 2006
Report Type: Journal
Report Class: Best Practice
Abstract: Continuing our series on the business modeling techniques we look at how an enterprise might adopt business modeling and design approaches for SOA and Enterprise Mashups.
Backgrounder: A business can be regarded as a platform of services. A platform is a coherent set of services offered by a business (or business collaboration). Platform strategy has important implications for the (variable) geometry of the single firm, as well as the interoperability of multiple firms. Amazon is a platform. eBay is a platform. The business model of companies such as these is to provide services that other companies can build upon. Following this thinking, we end up with a stratified business stack, with businesses building upon other businesses. This is the world of the mashup - but it is also the world of serious enterprise interoperability.
