Last month I observed some media debate around the question of whether there should be a standard for the SOA Maturity Model. I commented at the time that there are a number of issues with a maturity model standard, not least that there is no real need for a standard in the generally accepted sense.
But the question prompted me to think harder about standards in the SOA space. Of course we are all aware of the technical interoperability and management protocols (SOAP, WSDL, WS-Security, WS-Policy, WSDM etc and more recently JBI, SCA etc) that are playing a really important role in the developing SOA story. But remember these (apart from JBI and SCA) are not specifically SOA specific standards. We can also see that the OASIS SOA Reference Model TC is a worthy if somewhat academic attempt to establish a high level definition of SOA. And the OASIS effort brings the problem into sharp relief – that as an industry we continue to wrestle with the question – what is SOA? |
