| Abstract: |
This report presents a lifecycle model for a software service. An understanding of this lifecycle will help an SOA organization to better organize the provisioning and operation of software services. While the organization’s SOA policies may influence the shape of its service lifecycle model, the completed lifecycle model provides a potent tool for eliciting the more detailed policies for governing the efficient development and usage of software services. |
| Backgrounder: |
The service lifecycle has been discussed several times in previous CBDI Journals.
In January 2004, we published a report entitled “Establishing a Service Lifecycle”1. This report urged that a service needs to be managed throughout its lifecycle, and that service management should not be a consideration that is limited to deployed services. The author concludes with the view that:
“organizations will typically commence using Web services in relatively simple situations which often focus on overcoming limitations of technical dependence. Even in these early stages life cycle management is required to control usage of assets. However, as services become an integral part of business and system design, more comprehensive life cycle management becomes a key requirement.“
In this report, we shall be introducing a service lifecycle model that defines various stages in the life of a service, and identifies the activities which move the service between these stages. This model represents a crucial input to the design of SOA development procedures and the secure management of software services. |
