| Abstract: |
There has been a huge amount of interest in governance in context with SOA, but there has been little clarity. In this report we build on earlier CBDI work to develop a more rigorous view of SOA governance in which we clarify the nature of SOA impact on the broader SDLC. |
| Backgrounder: |
The term govern has numerous meanings including to rule with authority, conduct policy, actions and affairs; constitute a law, rule or principle; and to be predominating influence. Governance is the manner, fact or function of governing.
In context with SOA therefore the purpose of governance is the activity of establishing and implementing policies in order to ensure that the objectives of the SOA are complied with throughout the life of a service. We are concerned to control matters such as the identification, creation and use of shared services together with the standards and practices in a manner that delivers the levels of flexibility and reuse of business and technical services that are appropriate to a given situation.
This report comprises primarily of a table mapping the life cycle states to SOA policy and compliance checks across the life cycle. The purpose of this report is to provide explicit guidance on how SOA governance is applied. We anticipate that in most organizations there will be other complementary governance tasks as detailed in our SOA Governance Framework . It will be clear therefore from the detailed table that we are not concerned with the broader management task – we are only interested in ensuring the ongoing integrity of the service oriented architecture. |
