Report Summary
Title: Principles of Service Orientation
Author: Lawrence Wilkes
Publication Date: 10 March 2004
Report Type: Journal
Report Class: Best Practice
Abstract: In this report we outline the key principles of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and the Service Oriented Process (SOP)
Backgrounder: We expect that if asked, many organizations will say they have adopted SOA, or are simply “doing services” because they are using Web Service Protocols. Web Services bring many advantages but protocols on their own are not sufficient to support the full extent of business and IT agility requirements. It requires that a set of design and process principles are followed throughout the development life cycle in order that the promise of service orientation is fulfilled which we set out in this report. Equally important is a reference model that provides a more precise definition of the concepts used here including service, component, interface, and so on. This is documented in the SOA Reference Model also in this edition of the journal.
