| Abstract: |
Delivering on the agility promise of SOA needs a coordinated view of services and components that implement genuine loose coupling.
Componentry has been an important topic in the software industry for many years, and has always been a central focus for the CBDi Forum. More recently, along with lots of other people in the industry, we have been talking more about Web Services and SOA than about components. Does this mean that things have moved on, and components are no longer relevant? Not at all.

| Backgrounder: |
We suggest that the term Component Based Systems Engineering (CBSE) needs to be upgraded to Component Based Service Engineering. In this article, we discuss the interdependency of services and components and propose considerable extension to the current understanding of the term Loose Coupling. We envision a considerable refinement of SOA, with services and Components acting in a complementary fashion.
