| Backgrounder: |
From the point of view of the service-based business, insurance is a particularly interesting form of service. Value is created by transferring risk from one party to another; risk is transformed by being aggregated or distributed. Thus the value creation is intrinsic to the service itself, and depends in a curious way on the very granularity and distribution of the service. Furthermore, insurance is an information-intensive business, which makes it especially amenable to the electronic service-based business.
