| Abstract: |
A year ago, Microsoft announced its Trustworthy Computing initiative: People Trusting Computing. In this report, we discuss the progress Microsoft has made in this area, and provide a framework model for assessing and managing trustworthy capability - not just for Microsoft but for the whole industry. |
| Backgrounder: |
For some while now, Microsoft has been the subject of almost incessant criticism from the security world. Just over a year ago, Bill Gates responded boldly to this criticism, with an open email to Microsoft staff announcing a strategic shift to Trustworthy Computing. This email was then followed up by a white paper, which has already been revised several times since its first publication.
Few large corporations have shown themselves able to execute significant changes in strategic direction as quickly and effectively as Microsoft. Microsoft's rapid grasp of the opportunities of the Internet has already demonstrated the corporation's remarkable power to respond and adapt to new challenges. However, Microsoft's allies and critics alike can agree that if this strategic move is taken seriously, it could represent the biggest challenge Microsoft has faced to date. |
