Riverton Software Ships How 2.0 for Visual Basic. New Release of Component Modelling Tool Lets Business Developers Leverage Microsoft Enterprise Technologies to Build and Deploy Distributed Component-based Applications

May 18, 1998 - Riverton Software Corporation, a leading provider of component-based development technology for business applications, today announced it has shipped HOW 2.0 for Visual Basic. This new release of the company's component modelling and deployment tool now gives Visual Basic developers the ability to design and implement distributed component-based business applications.

Developed in co-operation with Microsoft, the UML-compliant component modelling tools in HOW 2.0 let business analysts and developers design all of the components in a three-tier application. From developers' component models, HOW for Visual Basic automatically generates ActiveX components and controls into Visual Basic 5.0. These components are DCOM-compliant, and fully interoperable with any other ActiveX components and controls. Using OpenFrame, HOW's distributed business component framework, developers can make components that automatically operate in Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS), creating distributed, high-performance and highly scalable applications as a result.

HOW 2.0 for Java is part of a multi-platform family of tools

HOW 2.0 for Visual Basic, HOW 2.0 for Java and the previously released HOW for PowerBuilder comprise a multi-platform family of products. In its second major release, HOW is a single modelling environment designed for three-tier application development that can generate component-based applications into any of three language platforms. OpenFrame, also a multi-platform deployment framework, ensures that HOW-generated applications leverage the specific distributed computing features of each supported platform.

Pricing and Availability

HOW 2.0 Professional Edition for Visual Basic is available immediately directly from Riverton Software and through the company's international distribution channel. Pricing for HOW 2.0 Professional Edition for Visual Basic will begin at $2,995. HOW 2.0 Enterprise Edition, which includes application modelling and deployment support for Visual Basic, Java and PowerBuilder, is also available immediately and will begin at $3,995. A Modelling Edition, which provides all of HOW's modelling tools but offers no component generation capability, will be priced at $1,995.

HOW 2.0 Learning Edition for Java (LE) will be available at no charge beginning May 29. At that time HOW LE will be available for download from the company's Web site or on CD ROM.
