The UML-compliant modelling tools in HOW 2.0 let business analysts and developers design an application’s user interface objects and middle-tier business objects, and the queries that furnish the business objects with data access. Developers also use HOW to model the business object properties, relationships and methods that the application requires.

From developers’ component models, HOW for Java automatically generates Java classes, including JavaBeans, into any leading Java development environment including Sun Microsystems Java WorkShop, Microsoft Visual J++, Sybase PowerJ, IBM VisualAge, Borland JBuilder, and Symantec Visual Cafe. HOW-built Java components are 100% Pure Java and can execute on remote servers, using either DCOM or CORBA as their distribution protocol.

HOW 2.0 for Java is part of a multi-platform family of tools

HOW 2.0 for Java, HOW 2.0 for Visual Basic (also available now) and the previously released HOW for PowerBuilder comprise a multi-platform family of products. In its second major release, HOW is a single modelling environment designed for three-tier application development that can generate component-based applications into any of three language platforms. OpenFrame, also a multi-platform deployment framework, ensures that HOW-generated applications leverage the specific distributed computing features of each supported platform.

Pricing and Availability

HOW 2.0 Professional Edition for Java is available immediately directly from Riverton Software and through the company’s international distribution channel. Pricing for HOW 2.0 Professional Edition for Java will begin at $2,995. HOW 2.0 Enterprise Edition, which includes language cartridges for Visual Basic, Java and PowerBuilder, is also available immediately and will begin at $3,995. A Modelling Edition, which provides all of HOW’s modelling tools but offers no component generation capability, will be priced at $1,995.

HOW 2.0 Learning Edition for Java (LE) will be available at no charge beginning May 29. At that time HOW LE will be available for download from the company’s Web site (www.riverton.com) or on CD-ROM. HOW 2.0 LE has all of the features and benefits of HOW 2.0 Professional Edition, and is limited only by a 30-day license.
