Compuware Announces Wide-ranging UNIFACE Initiative to Ensure the Availability Of Componentware. Technical Standards and Online Component Warehouse Enable Evolution To Large-scale Component-based Applications May 20, 1998 Compuware Corp. today announced a wide-ranging initiative aimed at ensuring the availability of componentware for the UNIFACE component-based development environment. The Components On Track Initiative provides a platform for Compuware and its partners to jointly market high-quality, reusable componentware through the definition of technical standards and guidelines for the production and publishing of enterprise-capable componentware. To assist partners in positioning and promoting their componentware, Compuware has developed the Component Plaza, an online component warehouse, containing a wide range of business components of varying levels of granularity. Among the Compuware partners committed to componentisation of their enterprise applications is Walker, a worldwide provider of financial software headquartered in San Francisco, CA. Walker has teamed up with Compuware to make its Aptos financial solutions available as discrete business components, such as general ledger, cash management and sales invoicing. The Component Plaza is being populated by Compuwares Business Alliance partners. Over time, Compuwares partners will ensure that components in the Component Plaza adhere to Compuwares standards and guidelines, thereby ensuring high levels of reusability. Today the Component Plaza features hundreds of components of varying size and complexity that developers can integrate into current systems or use as building blocks for new projects. Compuware is also providing participating members of the Components On Track Initiative with a comprehensive range of technical and marketing assistance to jump start component-based development. Partners will have access to beta software to help ensure that their solutions are compliant with the UNIFACE standards for componentware. Partners will also work in co-operation with Compuware in defining the direction of future deliverables supporting enterprise-scale component applications. The Components on Track Initiative is open to UNIFACE Business Alliance partners who offer the following types of componentware: Application Solutions Subsystems Business Components Technical Components Application Solutions Application solutions encompass whole business areas within an enterprise solution and are typically used by UNIFACE users who develop and assemble a system for its processes. Examples are accounting systems and human resources systems. Subsystems Subsystems are more finely granulated than application frameworks and feature well-defined functionality or operations. Examples of popular subsystems are telemarketing, shipping or payroll. Business Components Business components are finely granulated components that contain specific business functionality that many users develop time after time. An example is an employee attendance control. Technical Components Technical components are finely granulated components that contain technical functionality used to form the application infrastructure. Examples include security components, menu systems and batch scheduling.
