INTERSOLV Delivers First Component-based OLE DB Technology. DataDirect Reflector Enables Standards-based Data Access For Distributed Computing

March 16, 1998 INTERSOLV, Inc. today introduced DataDirect Reflector, a new OLE DB service provider that for the first time extends traditional database processing functions, such as SQL- based query and reporting, to previously unavailable non-relational data, including Lotus Notes, Microsoft Exchange, spreadsheets and e-mail. The first OLE DB technology to feature a component architecture, DataDirect Reflector enables organisations to fully leverage the benefits of distributed computing for increased competitive advantage.

DataDirect Reflector delivers consistent SQL database processing services to non-SQL data. Available for Microsoft's ActiveX Data Objects (ADO), the high-level programming interface for OLE DB, DataDirect Reflector's component- based architecture enables organisations to incrementally add query processing functionality across client, server and Internet environments as business needs require. Reflector easily fits between applications and OLE DB data providers or ODBC drivers for consistent, integrated, standards-based access to previously unavailable data. With integrated support for multiple standards such as ODBC, JDBC and now OLE DB, DataDirect delivers a standard, plug-and- play interface to all types of data, protecting organisations' existing technology investments.

Until now, organisations could only achieve open, standards-based access to traditional SQL-relational data typically stored in databases such as Oracle, Sybase and DB2, which have built-in SQL data processing capabilities. For example, a sales manager comparing yearly sales information contained in a relational database, with price book information in Lotus Notes, previously would not be able to use existing SQL-based applications or tools to perform this function. Now, using DataDirect Reflector, organisations can access and process new types of data without extensive custom development efforts.

Key features of DataDirect Reflector 1.0 include:

  • Extends SQL Processing Functionality to Non-SQL Data - DataDirect Reflector is a flexible, highly-optimised query processor engine (QPE) that enables organisations to access and perform SQL processing functions for additional types of non-SQL data. Reflector features an open, standard, plug-and-play interface for transparent access to enterprise data.
  • Flexible Deployment Options - DataDirect Reflector can be deployed in 2-tier and n-tier architectures for maximum flexibility and relies on its COM-based reusable component architecture to deliver value-added services. Organisations can mix-and-match all OLE DB components and ODBC drivers based on system and application needs across client, server or web environments.
  • Technology Investment Protection - Through an open, standard interface, Reflector provides the ability to process both SQL and non SQL data such as MAPI e-mail, Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes and Lotus cc:Mail. With DataDirect Connect OLE DB, Reflector supports ODBC, ADO and OLE DB applications, and can be used with any OLE DB data provider or ODBC technology to protect existing investments.
