SELECT And IBM To Collaborate On Component Management Architecture For IBM's San Francisco Initiative. SELECT and IBM Work Together to Componentise San Francisco

March 23, 1998--SELECT Software Tools, a leading vendor of component-based modelling and management tools, and IBM, Monday announced that SELECT and the IBM San Francisco development team will begin working together to introduce new component technology into San Francisco.

IBM will publish San Francisco components in SELECT Component Manager, providing ISVs with a clear component-based view of San Francisco and making it easier for them to customise the frameworks for specific client needs. In addition, the companies will also work together to develop a Java code generator for San Francisco, which will be marketed by both companies.

The San Francisco initiative is a cooperative, worldwide effort of industry leading software companies led by IBM to create a flexible, Java-based foundation for business applications. IBM is delivering Java building blocks for general business processes such as sales order processing, general ledger, inventory management and product distribution. San Francisco provides software developers with application foundations to enable them to focus on specialisation for target markets and customers.

The San Francisco frameworks provide a significant portion of the common foundations required by a typical business application, allowing ISVs to focus their attention on custom extensions for their customers. With this announcement, ISVs can use SELECT Component Manager to easily locate components that meet their needs and understand their functionality and value. Using the component modelling capabilities of SELECT Enterprise, ISVs can view and extend the frameworks and deliver the complete application to their customers.

Benefits for ISV's Using San Francisco:

  • Provides a clear component-based view of the San Francisco framework making it easier for ISVs to customise the frameworks for specific client needs;
  • Allows ISVs and other developers to add business components to those supplied with San Francisco, so a long-range strategic toolset and component development environment evolves naturally;
  • Facilitates ISV migration to later releases of San Francisco as it moves to a Java Bean component-based architecture;
  • Improves development-time reuse of components by allowing ISVs to easily search for components that meet their needs and understand their functionality and value;
  • Improves time-to-market, saving time and money

About SELECT Component Factory

SELECT Component Factory (SCF) helps organisations successfully implement a supplier/consumer model of component-based development (CBD). Component suppliers can access and leverage existing IT assets and build new components. Component consumers can assemble applications from pre-supplied components. Providing the communication between suppliers and consumers is SELECT's unique component management capability. Using SCF enables the rapid development of component-based systems that meet evolving business needs.
