CBDI-SAE™ Meta Model for SOA Version 2
 


Version 2 of the CBDI-SAE meta model for SOA is now available to all registered members (Bronze, Silver and Gold).

Since we published the Version 1 back in October 2006 we have:

  • Carried out a review with interested customers
  • Moved the model forward to reflect customer and internal Everware-CBDI feedback
  • Made the model available to the industry bodies OMG and HL7
  • Having completed the reviews and revised version we are now, as promised last year, making the model available in the public domain.

Our objective in making the model available is to provide a detailed concept model together with definitions as a mechanism for clarity and consistency that can form the basis for coherent cross lifecycle asset recording and management.

We don't expect this model to be the final answer. Rather it is an attempt to provide a high quality model that, in our opinion, illustrates what the industry as a whole needs in order to facilitate a more mature SOA marketplace. Clearly we are not a standards body, but by making this model available we will be looking to encourage a wider consensus on these ideas and concepts.

The UML Profile for the meta model should be available shortly.

The January and February CBDI Journal are covering this in reports. The UML profile will be available for download sometime after that.

1) Will you be publishing a UML profile for this model?

2) Do you have any example models that were built with this meta-model?

I tend to ascribe to an economics-based definition of service, that is, "a service can be defined as a set of benefits delivered from the accountable service provider" as per the definition currently on Wikipedia. This definition is universal; there is no need to distinguish business services and software services. The distinction required for what you call "software services" is really captured when we consider methods for delivering a service. For example, a bank provides a funds-transfer service but the delivery method could be via a branch, over the phone or over the Internet (via an Internet application or web service). We can think of a "web service" as being a method for delivery of a service via use of the Internet. It is not the service itself!



I believe that this modelling approach will provide better clarity in the SAE model. To me it seems that you are departing too far from the business concept of service --- I don't think this departure is necessary.

The SOA Meta Model will provide valuable guidance to companies as they struggle to understand the relationship between various elements in the business and technical domains. It very closely represents the pattern that we have used and that has made the Con-way SOA implementation successful.

This model is well conceived, well executed, and potentially well timed to serve as a basis for significant SOA evolutionary progress. I hope the model development continues and is fed by feedback from broad adoption and real-world application.
